In the past few weeks, we had many wonderful entries to the Monarch of the Monsters contest, and our talented and skilled judges chose five finalists from among the entries. We now present those five finalists to you so that you can enjoy them, and, at the end of the week, vote on your favorite. This time, we have the phlogistian faerie by Jeff Lee.
A lithe, feminine form leaps and twirls amid the conflagration, not only unharmed by the flames, but seemingly buoyed by them. She tosses her fiery locks and gives a laugh like the roar of the wildfire itself.

SPECIAL ABILITIES
Flamedancer (Su): When in or above (within 5 feet) flames, a phlogistian faerie’s movement rates are doubled, and her normally invisible wings blaze with fire. Her maneuverability class increases to perfect and she gains a +8 bonus to her Fly skill. When in areas of flames, her land movement is unhindered by difficult terrain.
Revoke the Gift (Su): With a successful touch attack, a phlogistian faerie can remove the spark of fire from a living creature. The creature gains immunity to fire, but quickly finds that it cannot get warm. The creature must make Fortitude saves every 10 minutes or suffer 1d6 nonlethal damage, as if suffering from exposure to severe cold. Cold weather gear and Survival checks cannot provide bonuses to these saves. Once it has taken nonlethal damage, it becomes fatigued as hypothermia sets in. If rendered unconscious by damage, the creature takes 1d6 lethal cold damage each minute until dead. This is a curse effect. A successful break enchantment, remove curse, or a touch of phlogiston will remove the effects.
Smoke Sight (Su): A phlogistian faerie can see through fire, fog, and smoke without penalty.
Touch of Phlogiston (Ex): A phlogistian faerie’s touch attack infuses its target with quintessential fuel, making a creature or object more susceptible to fire attacks. A creature or object under the effects of the touch of phlogiston takes +1 damage per die from the next fire attack it suffers and automatically catches fire (objects only do so if normally flammable). If a touched creature is already burning, then the damage it takes per round is doubled and the DC of the Reflex save to extinguish the flames is increased by 2. If it has fire resistance, it does not suffer the normal effects of this ability, but its resistance is reduced by 5 for 1 minute. This effect stacks. Creatures immune to fire are immune to the effects of this power. If a phlogistian faerie maintains contact with an object for a full minute, then the damage from the next fire attack upon it bypasses its hardness and the object catches fire, even if it is not normally flammable, such as objects made of stone or metal.
DESCRIPTION
A phlogistian faerie resembles an elf with long red hair and eyes like burning coals. Her ruddy skin is clothed in nothing but the smoke and flames in which she dances, and perhaps a few choice pieces of jewelry. Its voice crackles and roars like fire itself. A phlogistian faerie is a creature of passion and anger, of destruction but also renewal. She delights in the inexorable advance of a wildfire as it devours everything in its path, reveling in the carnage but also the promise of new growth that inevitably follows. She has no mercy for those too foolish to flee from the flames, but can sometimes be swayed to take pity on settlements and residents incapable of escaping an approaching fire, using repeated applications of pyrotechnics to create a fire break. If attacked, a phlogistian faerie replies in kind with all the power at its disposal, but will quickly withdraw from combat with creatures that show immunity to fire.
Nicely done, Jeff! This reminds me of my daughter’s halfling (fire) elemental-bloodline sorcerer. :)
Nice. Revoke the Gift and Touch of Phlogiston are both thematic and well-written. Bonus points for giving her blistering invective, love that spell!
Thanks, guys. This is going to be a full on competition. All these entries are really, really strong contenders.
Best of luck!
This is another of my favorites in the batch. Great work here.
-Ben.
Well done Jeff,
The touch of the phlogistian and revoke the gift might have been enough to make a really cool critter. The fact that you have both. The fact that you have both, and that they fit so well together makes this a top five. Congratulations and well done!
This one would be great to have illustrated!
*slaps forehead* I just figured out what’s missing from the Revoke the Gift ability. One final line: Killing the phlogistian faerie that afflicted the creature will also remove its effects.
A very cool (or should I say hot) beastie! I particularly like the special abilities designed for her.
I recommend that GMs planning to use the faerie swap out her Sense Motive +15 for Intimidation +21. That will make her blistering invective magic much more effective. Without that, she has a mere Intimidation +5, which isn’t likely to impress many foes.
