Midgard: Order of the Septime Lancers

The Midgard campaign setting continues to develop setting, characters, and adventure hooks galore, but the patrons and designers are also venturing into Pathfinder RPG rules material. Here’s one result of that work.

The Order of the Septime Lancers

The constant warfare and border skirmishes of the Seven Cities spawn many mercenary companies and warrior orders. One of the largest and most well-known is the Order of the Septime Lancers. The order produces cavaliers known for their personal flamboyance and daring tactical maneuvers in battle.

Edicts: A cavalier sworn to this order serves and protects their current patron. They have no fixed loyalty except to contracts, but a contract is bond. Beyond the patron, the cavalier must see to the interests of his company, then his order, then himself. While selfless in service, they are not beyond seeking new ways to increase their wealth, prestige and power. They are known for their colorful uniforms and heraldry, and are known for going into battle with a cacophony of bards accompanying them, playing brazen battle hymns on bagpipes, longhorns, tympani, et al.

You can always hear them coming”
              – Unknown Mharoti General

Challenge: Whenever a Septime Lancer issues a challenge, he receives a +1 dodge bonus to his AC vs. the target of his challenge. This bonus increases by one for every four levels gained by the cavalier.

Skills: A Septime Lancer can add Knowledge (Local – Seven Cities) and Acrobatics to his class skills. In addition, whenever the cavalier makes a charge attack, he does not take the -2 AC penalty and does triple (not double) damage with a lance while making a mounted charge.

Order Abilities

Slyboots (Ex): At 2nd level, the Septime Lancer gains the ability to maneuver lightly through combat and gain the most advantageous position. The cavalier gains the Mobility feat as a bonus feat, even if he does not have the normal prerequisites. The cavalier can use this feat mounted or unmounted. The lancer also gains the ability to mount or dismount as a free action with no Ride Check required. The cavalier also gains Outflank as a bonus teamwork feat.

Flashing Riposte (Ex): At 8th level, the Septime Lancer gains Trick Riding as a bonus feat, even if he does not have the normal prerequisites. He also gains the ability to strike an opponent that has missed the cavalier with a charge attack. The cavalier gains an attack of opportunity against that enemy as a free and immediate action. The cavalier can use this ability every time an opponent misses him with a charge attack. He can use it multiple times if missed by more than one charging opponent per round. He also gains Swap Places as a bonus teamwork feat, but using this feat does not provoke an attack of opportunity.

Insult to Injury (Ex): At 15th level, the Septime Lancer gains Quick Draw as a bonus feat, even if he does not have the normal prerequisites. Also, after making a successful charge attack, the Septime Lancer can make an immediate melee attack of opportunity against the same opponent. The lancer ends his turn adjacent to the opponent with his melee weapon in his hand. The Lancer can make this attack regardless of whether he is mounted or dismounted. He also gains Paired Opportunists as a bonus teamwork feat.

  1. The 4E materials are under discussion in the 4E section of the Midgard forums. Definitely put in a word there: I suspect this might be something given consideration.

And yeah, the art is coming together pretty well so far.
