The Song Undying: Magic

The Song Undying: Magic

These spells were developed by Salamondre and the cult, harnessing the power of the Song Undying and the Thrice-Cursed Heart. These spells can be used by any suitable NPCs or creatures associated with the Song Undying. Also provided is a more detailed description of the ritual used by the cult to create their undead minions.

Lullaby

Enchantment cantrip
Casting Time: 1 action
Range: 30 feet
Components: V
Duration: 1 minute

You sing a lullaby to a target within range. If the target fails a Wisdom saving throw, it has disadvantage on saving throws against spells and effects that cause sleep for the duration of the spell.

Luring Melody

2nd-level enchantment (bard, sorcerer)
Casting Time: 1 action
Range: 60 feet
Components: V, S
Duration: Concentration, up to 10 minutes

You use a hypnotic melody to compel creatures to follow you. Choose a specific type of creature (such as goblins, rats, and so on) to be affected by the spell. Once you have a specific type of creature, you can be as specific or general as you like (such as all goblins or only white rats). All creatures of the chosen type within range of the spell must succeed at a Wisdom saving throw or be charmed until the spell ends. As a bonus action on your subsequent turns for the duration, you can continue the melody. You can stop at any time and end the spell.

While charmed by the spell, a creature is incapacitated. If a charmed creature is more than 5 feet away from you, it must move on its turn toward you by the most direct route. The charmed creature will avoid any obvious dangers, such as hostile creatures or dangerous terrain. If a charmed creature takes damage, it can repeat the saving throw. A charmed target can also repeat the saving throw at the end of each of its turns. If the saving throw is successful, the effect ends on it.

Note of Discord

2nd-level evocation (bard, sorcerer)
Casting Time: 1 action
Range: 30 feet
Components: V
Duration: Instantaneous

You sing out a discordant note that assaults the senses of the listener, unbalancing them. Enemy creatures within a 30-foot-radius sphere centered on you must succeed on a Dexterity saving throw when you cast this spell or be affected by it.

An affected creature has disadvantage on attack rolls and on Dexterity checks and saving throws until the beginning of your next turn. If a creature fails its save by 5 or more, it is incapacitated until the beginning of your next turn.

Note of Harmony

3rd-level enchantment (bard, sorcerer)
Casting Time: 1 action
Range: 30 feet
Components: V
Duration: Instantaneous

You sing a magical note that harmonizes your allies, increasing your chances of success. All allies within 30 feet of you when you cast this spell gain advantage on attacks, saving throws, and skill checks made until the beginning of your next turn.

RITUAL OF REJUVENATION

This ritual is used in one of two ways. First, it can be used to return the dead to seeming life (actually unlife), restoring the body and reinstating the soul back into the restored body. Second, it can be used to rejuvenate a living creature, restoring it physically and removing any harmful diseases or poisons: this process converts the living creature into an undead creature, though one that resembles the living version of the creature, at least physically.

Salamondre, who has mastered the Song Undying, or so he claims, leads the ritual. He is typically accompanied by higher-ranking members of the cult known as the Greater Choir. Most of these are living cultists, though occasionally some of the reborn join in. The ritual is also supported by the Lesser Choir, a group of hollow ones who provide additional voices and thus more power to the magic of the ritual. Occasionally, Salamondre will perform the ritual with only the Lesser Choir, either due to members of the Greater Choir being preoccupied elsewhere or simply because he is testing himself, working to improve his command over the Heart and his mastery of the Song Undying.

For the ritual, the Thrice-Cursed Heart is brought forth from the locked iron box in the cult’s reliquary and installed within a great crystal chandelier that hangs in the cult’s central shrine. The light from the Heart makes an enchanting display when it shines through the crystal of the chandelier. This fixture also serves a second purpose: it enhances the music that emanates from the Heart: the crystals hum and reverberate with the music, providing another layer of sound that is woven into the ritual. The Lesser Choir is installed on choral risers in an adjacent area while the Greater Choir, if present, joins Salamondre in a circle within the shrine, around the central area where the Heart is suspended. The subject of the ritual lies at the room’s center, beneath the chandelier. The Song Undying is then sung, its wordless vocals manipulating matter and energy, restoring flesh to dry bone or restoring a withered body to its prime. A single ritual session takes 4 hours and is taxing upon its participants. Living creatures involved in the ritual each receive a level of exhaustion as the ritual draws upon their life energies to fuel the magic. In this time, skeletal remains can rise as a hollow one, or a hollow one can become a reborn, though it cannot pass as fully living without at least one more ritual performed upon it, sometimes two or three, depending on the individual. A living creature subjected to the ritual becomes a reborn after three ritual sessions.
