Today we delve into the potential strangeness you might find within the local apothecary’s shop. Again, these details are easily noted by visitors, and you can use them as starting points to flesh out some other interesting things if the player characters choose to look around a bit more. If you want to roll randomly for one, use the handy number provided with each entry to figure out your result on a d12. You can also pick the one that works for the area in which your characters currently linger.
d12. Item
- A small, black mortar and pestle is sitting on an ivory card that claims: “Crafted from unicorn horn. Enjoy!”
- Hanging dark green vines drape an inner doorway. They all writhe, reaching out for any who approach with tiny white hands. The hands on one of the vines has a few silver bells that tinkle with each movement.
- Seven small turtles wander the room. Each has a lit candle on its back, and though the candles are black wax, each flame is a different color: red, orange, yellow, green, blue, purple, white.
- A sealed jar contains fluttering moths. The pattern on their wings resembles humanoid skulls.
- The rafters are filled with a wide variety of nesting songbirds, and the area under the birds is kept immaculately clean except for a wide variety of feathers. A new feather drifts down every ten minutes or so.
- The counter has five rows of shimmering powder on it. As you watch, the powder forms the words, “Help me, please.” The words vanish when the shop’s owner look that way.
- On a nearby wall, a map of a tower hangs. Notes are scrawled all over it indicating that the place is full of rare plants.
- The entire length of the wall has various forms of lichens and mosses covering it. Some glow, and one moss has tiny little speckles of light drifting near it. The smell in that area is that of roses and burned hair.
- A kettle over a blazing fire in a fireplace has something boiling in it frothily. A tiny fire elemental dances in the fire, and a similarly sized water elemental occasionally jumps out of the boiling water and dives back in.
- A wooden rack contains a series of labeled glass jars. Amid the various types of seeds contained in these jars is one called, “Seed of Neverending Doom — Keep Dry!” Further, a date is scrawled on the label: It’s tomorrow’s date.
- Two 1-ft.-tall treants are chasing each other around the room.
- Windchimes hang in every window in the apothecary. Each one has a plaque indicating a weather condition. The only one chiming right now is labeled as “sleet.” Funny how it’s sleeting outside right now.
I really like this! I just got finished reading the one on taverns as well, between these two articles your PCs barely need to leave town. These are great for cultivating a contact or an ongoing villain and you can never have too many of either one. Thanks!
