Periodically, the kobold crew will be sharing sneak peeks of some of the fantastic art set to appear in the pages of the Scarlet Citadel adventure. Today, we share the opening piece for Chapter 6!
Flowing deceptively still through a sinister cavern, the Black River winds its way through the fifth level of the Scarlet Citadel dungeon.
In this dynamic piece by artist Egil Thompson, three heroes carefully cross the river in a rowboat when suddenly a gargoctopus bursts from the water, aiming to pull our adventurers to their doom! The monster’s menacing tentacles have already knocked our dragonkin hero from the boat, as shown in the image’s bottom-left corner.
For those with an affinity for raging cephalopods, the gargoctopus is a Challenge 5 creature from Kobold Press’s Creature Codex. The gargoctopus boasts a particularly punishing multiattack with either four tentacles or a bite and three tentacles.
Add to that an ability to squirt an obscuring ink cloud into the water and fling smaller creatures with its tentacles, and this is an intense foe indeed for adventurers who delve into the Scarlet Citadel.
