Collection of Curiosities: The Bottle of Spirits

"Jiro the Kobold" by Pat LoboykoAs the year draws to an end, some of you might be enjoying the company of friends and family—and perhaps you will share a bottle of good cheer. Why not take inspiration from that activity to create a few curious bottled beverages for your game? You can roll randomly for a result below, or use the handy number provided with each entry to figure out your result on a d12. You can also pick the one that works for the area in which your characters currently linger.

d12. Curiosity

  1. A miniaturized, purple blowfish is drifting inside the clear liquid of the bottle.
  2. This worm expands and animates when the spirits inside the bottle are gone. You really don’t want that worm.
  3. The bottle contains the purest air, and a tiny fey spirit peers at you from inside the bottle, clearly waiting for you to pop the cork.
  4. You’re not quite sure if your digestion can handle this beverage that is glowing blood-red inside the clear glass bottle.
  5. This bottle literally contains spirits of the undead kind. When freed, the puns begin.
  6. A beverage that uses crickets as an element in its bottling is probably going to have a very limited audience.
  7. A tiny golden crown rests at the bottom of this crystal bottle. You see runes shimmer faintly now and again.
  8. When shaken, the quicksilver liquid inside this clear bottle takes on the fiery hue of lava and warms up. The goal is to imbibe the entire bottle before it changes back to its quicksilver form. Or melts the glass of the bottle.(Strangely, it does no harm to those imbibing the liquid.)
  9. When opened, the liquid in this bottle smells of anise. Then cinnamon. Then yeast. Then peppermint. The taste of the beverage changes based on what the imbiber smells as it is sipped.
  10. The label on this bottle claims that it is liquid courage. Upon opening it, the scent of chocolate overwhelms everyone in the room. Is the scent of chocolate a promise of its taste?
  11. Glittery bits of metal catch the light in the contents of this bottle. When opened, the bottle’s glittery contents spring into the air, resembling a fireworks show. A rich amber liquid is left behind.
  12. Upon being opened, this green bottle sounds like a party whistle. The cloud of green mist that comes from the bottle briefly intoxicates everyone who catches a whiff of it.
