The Song Undying: Magic Items

The Song Undying: Magic Items

The following magic items are used by Salamondre and his cult to enhance their magical powers and their facility with the Song Undying. The most important of these, and the central power of the cult, is the Thrice-Cursed Heart.

Empowering Amplifier

Wondrous item, uncommon (requires attunement)

This hollow cone of beaten brass has a handle attached at one side. When attuned to the amplifier, you can use an action to sing through it, channeling your voice and magical power into deadly sonic attacks. The amplifier has 3 charges. You can spend a charge as an action to expend a spell slot and sing through the amplifier. Treat this as a spell attack with a range of 60 feet. On a hit, the target takes 9 (2d8) thunder damage per level of the spell slot. A follower of the Song Undying has advantage on attack rolls using the amplifier and deals 11 (2d10) thunder damage per spell slot level.

The amplifier regains all expended charges daily at dawn.

Resounding Bell

Wondrous item, rare (requires attunement by a bard)

When you are concentrating on a spell, you can ring this golden bell each round as a bonus action to trigger its magic. From the time the bell is rung until the beginning of your next turn, you gain advantage on Constitution saving throws made to maintain concentration of the spell. Magic that stops sound, such as silence, render the bell inoperable until it can be heard again.

If you fail a Constitution save to maintain a spell, you can use a reaction to choose to succeed on the save instead. You maintain concentration of the spell for the remainder of the duration, as long as you continue to use your bonus action to ring the bell. The spell ends if you do not ring the bell to maintain concentration. Once this power of the bell is used, it cannot be used again until you have completed a long rest.

Restorative Gargle

Potion, common

This herbal concoction is meant to be gargled and spat out. When you use this potion, you gain advantage for 1 hour on any Charisma (Perform) checks made for singing or speaking. The next bard spell you cast while the potion is in effect has a +1 bonus to its save DC.

Thrice-Cursed Heart

Wondrous item, artifact (requires attunement)

This jeweled egg is fashioned of gold and platinum, detailed with colored enamel, and set with tiny jewels. Hinged doors open to reveal a gold orb suspended in the middle of the egg by chains of

white gold. The orb has a hidden door that opens to reveal a gold clockwork heart. A tiny turnkey protrudes from the heart. If this key is turned, the heart beats, creating music. A chain of metal beads

(each containing a scrap of paper with musical notes) is wrapped about the heart within the orb. This chain ties the item to Salamondre, allowing it to function as his phylactery. If the chain is removed and destroyed, so is Salamondre, and this allows someone else to attune themself to the artifact.

Created by a devoted servant of Lada, the goddess imbued her power within the object, intending it to be an instrument of peace, love, and healing. The artifact was named Lada’s Heart. However, the goldsmith’s work also gathered the attention of Lada’s enemies, those her church calls the three evil sisters: Marena, Sarastra, and the White Goddess. They were furious at the thought of such a symbol of Lada’s power being present in the world. They worked together to corrupt the egg, adding their own magics to twist and warp the original intent of the item, and transformed it into a subtle, corrupting evil item, veiled by beauty. Thus, it became the Thrice-Cursed Heart.

Random Properties. The Thrice-Cursed Heart has the following random properties:

  • 2 minor beneficial properties
  • 1 major beneficial property
  • 2 minor detrimental properties
  • 1 major detrimental property

The detrimental properties of the Thrice-Cursed Heart are suppressed while Salamondre is attuned to it, and it still serves as his phylactery.

Harmony of the Song. Any spell slot you expend to cast a bard or cleric spell counts as one spell slot higher.

Secrets of Creation. The music created by the Heart provides insight into the universe and its secrets. You gain advantage on all Intelligence, Wisdom, and Charisma skill checks.

Spells. The Heart has 8 charges. You can use an action and expend 1 or more charges to cast one of the following spells (save DC 18) from it: bestow curse (2 charges), chaotic world* (2 charges), feeblemind (4 charges), hard heart* (1 charge), harry* (2 charges), heartache* (1 charge), mass suggestion (3 charges), or screaming ray* (1 charge).

Destroying the Heart. As long as the Thrice-Cursed Heart serves as Salamondre’s phylactery, it can only be destroyed by being crushed underfoot by a member of Salamondre’s bloodline who is an innocent. If no longer serving as Salamondre’s phylactery, the Heart can be destroyed if a reformed former follower of one of the three evil goddesses that corrupted the Heart strikes it with a holy avenger. It is rumored that a high priestess of Lada once discovered a way to cleanse the Heart, returning it to the holy relic it was supposed to be, but that she died before she was able to reveal the method to do so.
