Collection of Curiosities: The Healer’s Satchel

"Jiro the Kobold" by Pat LoboykoThat person wandering around giving first aid on the field of combat needs a way to carry around supplies if he or she isn’t able to provide healing of the more magical kind. And if the battle isn’t quite over yet? That very healer might end up becoming a casualty—and the satchel might be left behind. You can use any of these details as starting points to flesh out some other interesting things if the player characters choose to look around a bit more. If you want to roll randomly for one, use the handy number provided with each entry to figure out your result on a d12. You can also pick the one that works for the area in which your characters currently linger.

d12. Curiosity

  1. A tiny puppy whines from inside the satchel.
  2. Five colorfully painted gnome statues with different hued goofy hats all are making rude gestures.
  3. A collection of loose needles—both metal and bone—are in the satchel. Any who reach in without looking find this out the hard way.
  4. Why are there thieves’ tools inside the satchel amid the bandages and ointments?
  5. A wig crafted from bright red long hair fills the bottom of the satchel.
  6. The only clue to the fact that the bottom of the satchel contains a portal to a bee hive is the swarm of bees that come out of the satchel when it is first opened.
  7. A full set of essential oils is the only other thing in this satchel with rolls of bandages. The rose vial is broken—the area smells of roses when the satchel is opened.
  8. A collection of love letters has been tied together with a black string. A tiny stirge skull is the decorative element where the string is knotted.
  9. Any time the satchel is opened, a frog croaks nearby.
  10. Amid the healer’s tools is a single piece of parchment with this written in a neat hand upon it: Why did it have to be vampiric djinn? Again? Meet me at the displacer beast farm as soon as possible.
  11. A set of blood-red marbles clinks around in the bag, along with some very old taffy.
  12. The petals of a flower sacred to the deity of merriment and mirth fill the satchel.
