Hjalmar Dåkassen carries an air of superiority whether he is in a jarl’s council chambers or having a drink with his reaver kin in the street. His cold eyes and impassive expression serve to intimidate his foes and allies alike. His cloak is made from the hide of the polar bear he single-handedly killed when he was but a boy. The rings that top his staff jingle against each other in an almost musical manner, which seems almost incongruous given his stern countenance.
Born to Pillage. When the raiding season arrives each year, Hjalmar is the first to heed its call. He revels in the rush he feels at the first sound of weapons on shields. Hjalmar endeavors to be at the tip of the spear when his comrades form a wedge. He leads with lightning and thunder to clear the path between him and his enemies’ front line. Despite his lust for battle, Hjalmar can be patient when it is called for. His units have used his magically conjured fogs and storms to cover evidence of their presence on numerous occasions, only to attack while their targets’ defenses are down.
Faith in the Old Ways. Hjalmar is a devout adherent to his peoples’ traditions and pays much deference to Wotan, Thor, and Volund. In battle, he chants the holy words of his gods or intones their hymns, his deep baritone underscoring the cries of the injured and clashing of metal. He sees no dishonor in ruthlessness, but he treats fairly with his opponents once they have surrendered. Hjalmar’s actions and demeanor on the battlefield have caused him to be singled out as a priest on numerous occasions, much to the chagrin of enemies who expect him to comport himself like a cleric.
