An excellent game aid and a must have if you buy the Tome of Beasts and Book of Lairs. Solid cardboard pawns and the same excellent art from the Tome of Beasts. Only two complaints: (1) The artwork of many of the pawns goes over the cut lines, so that weapons and other extremities get cut off. (2) It would be nice to have more specific recommendations on appropriate bases. As someone who has not purchased cardboard, stand-up pawns before, I really don’t know what bases to buy to use with these.

I also have to say the quality of the cardboard is great – nice and sturdy. However the art on many extend outside the actual pawn so once taken out of the holding board, they lose some of that good art. Its also a bit of an issue that pan stands are Not Included and there are no pawn stands available here in the store. So what are we supposed to use? Right now this is a just a space hog for me.

You can use office binder clips (the black ones), or stands are widely available from seveal companies, including Fantasy Flight and Paizo. Links below.

Regarding some bits of art going off the edges of the pawns – this is not a flaw. It is simply the nature of producing printed pawns. You’ll find that bits of art go out past the edges / get cut off on other pawn sets as well, including Paizo’s many Pathfinder Bestiary pawn ets as well.

This issue is that the die-cut (the shape and size of the different pawn edges) are pre-dertermied at the press. The art has to fit within those pre-determined die-cut shapes. If a given piece of art has some element that goes off the edge (say, the very tip of a wing, or the end of a cloak) it’s just the nature of the beast.

You could reduce the size of the art until every last bit of it fits within the die-cut but that actually causes a much worse problem – it alters the scale of the monster! Imagine having a size Large dragon for instance that looks more like a size Small dragon, becasue the art was reduced just so a wing tip isn’t cut off.

So, bottom line: due to the nature of printing pawns, the occassional bit of art bleeding bast the edge of the die cut is NOT a flaw, it’s just the nature of printing pawns 🙂

Excellent quality pawns that go great with the Tome of Beasts.

The art of the cave dragon is different that in the Tome of Beasts but still looks good.

Overall, I’m very satisfied with my purchase.
