Kobold’s Guide to Game Design Comes to the iPad

KGGD1 ON IBOOKSTOREKobolds love gadgets, even ones that don’t include hidden poisoned spikes or triggers that drop you into pits. So we’re happy to announce that we’ve gotten our claws into the newest shiny gadget on the market. Behold!

Yep, you can now buy The Kobold’s Guide to Game Design, Vol. I, at the iPad’s iBookstore

Of course, you can open any PDF from KQ or Open Design on the iPad; however, they haven’t been optimized for the iPad, so we can’t guarantee that all of the IMPERIAL GAZETTEER ON IPADformatting will be preserved. But during production on Imperial Gazetteer for Pathfinder Roleplaying Game, our layout designer snapped some photos of how the PDF version looks when you read it on the iPad.

You can expect e-reader devices and apps such as the iPad, Amazon’s Kindle, and Borders’ upcoming Kobo eReader to have a major impact on game publishing; and while we can’t give away any specific plans just yet, it’s a safe bet that this won’t be the last electronic kobold you’ll see creeping around in the digital warrens.

  1. I *know*!

I wish we had time to convert everything to an iPad optimized format (ePub). But there’s all these NEW shiny projects coming along this summer as well.

What KQ issues, sourcebooks, or adventures would people most want to see?

  2. Wow – too cool!

Is it feasable to offer the magazine in the ePub format? I admit I’m not really up on this yet (but I WILL be getting an iPad soon!)

  3. Yes, it is certainly possible to offer the magazine via the iBookstore for iPads. And I’d like to, but…

Time is the problem; we’re already slammed just doing print and PDF. Another format is more work, so…. It would be great if we had someone who could help sort it out.

You feel like researching and documenting some of the tools and requirements to go from InDesign to ePub? If so, issue 11 goes up for conversion first.

  4. Hey Wolfgang

If you are serious about it, I’d be glad to help – I certainly know the software! I’ll shoot you an e-mail …

  5. I take it this is only for the US? I had a look in the UK iBookstore but couldn’t find it. :(

  6. I own an iPad and read the PDF copies of Kobold Magazine using GoodReader. It looks incredible. In the next release of firmware for the iPad the iBooks application will support the ability to import PDFs via email or iTunes.

I am fine with the idea of having ePub format but PLEASE continue to have PDF. I want a single digital copy that works well on my desktop, laptop, and iPad. Right now, PDF gives me that.
