Big Kobold Dreams

Big Kobold Dreams

The Kobold Diplomats have spoken: The augurs are good; the planets have aligned.

Kobold Quarterly is ready to kick things up a notch.

For the past two years, you, our readers, have stepped up to the plate for us time and time again. You were with us when we were black and white and barely 50 pages. Your submissions and passion for our hobby made sure Kobold Quarterly would be more than just another also-ran, fly-by-night game publication whose flame burns brightly yet briefly. And your constant feedback and support have ensured our magazine can make games better, one game at a time.

You’ve given us submissions. You’ve given us your money. Most importantly, you’ve given us your time and attention. And we’re going to repay you by asking for just a little bit more.

We need minions.

OK, no, we don’t actually need minions. What we do need is your help to get Kobold Quarterly in your friendly local gaming stores. It’s actually pretty easy, but we can’t do it alone.

We kobolds are smart and sassy. We know traps and tricks. But there’s only so many of us to go around.

A magazine lives and dies by the news-stand — and for Kobold Quarterly to grow, we have to find ways to get our magazine to the gamers who don’t know about us yet.

Understand this: we’re proud of our Web site. We value each and every reader who takes time out of their day to stop by our forums to chat with us about what’s working and what isn’t. We’re excited that our Web exclusive content is generating traffic and creating new subscribers every month.

And now we need to spread the word about the things we’re doing every issue. To do it, we just need you to answer two questions — either in the comments or e-mail to [email protected].

Does your friendly local gaming store currrently carry Kobold Quarterly? If so, great! Please let us know — and if you have it, give us your store’s contact information so that our advertising critters can remind these stores that we appreciate their business.

If your friendly local gaming store doesn’t carry us, let us know that, too. It doesn’t take a genius to realize there’s a dragon-shaped hole in gaming stores’ magazine racks that we’re dying to fill – but we’ll never know about the opportunity to build our circulation if you don’t tell us where these opportunities are.

Where is your friendly local game store? Give us a store name, an address or a phone number and we’ll do everything we can to make sure an FLGS near you has copies of Kobold Quarterly for sale.

Kobolds may be proud, but we’re not stupid. We know our limitations, and we know when we need help. So please, help us. Send an e-mail to [email protected] or leave a comment so we can know exactly where we need to be putting our energy before the big Summer issue hits.

The Compleat Strategist in New York does not.

Here’s the address and contact details:
    http://www.thecompleatstrategist.com
11 East 33rd Street (between Madison and Fifth Avenue)
    New York, NY 10016
    212-685-3880

They have 3 other stores in the country. I don’t know whether they hold it or not. I know they do stock Level Up.

  2. Game Daze in Arizona could use this magazine. The best contact would be Ron Blessing at the Tucson Mall Store (520-293-7940) or through his website (www.thegamesthething.com).

  3. Matt’s Cavalcade Of Comics Cards & Collectibles used to carry Dragon, and it carries some Pathfinders, but it does not carry KQ.
    2075 NW Buchanan Ave
    Corvallis,OR97330
    541-752-6757

  4. I doubt (though do not know for sure) that my old favourite shop in Munich stocks it. It used to sell Dungeon and Dragon magazines, though, so I guess they might consider carrying KQ:

    Games-In
    Dachauer Str. 42
    80335 München
    Germany
    0049-89-555767
    [email protected]

The shop (and publishing house) is owned by Karl-Heinz Strietzel, but his employee Wolfgang (!) will probable deal with such enquiries, I guess.

  5. Gave a call and made sure Dragon’s Lair (http://www.dlair.net/) here in Austin was still a customer, and they are. Most of our shops are comics, but I also hit up Tribe Comics & Games (http://www.yelp.com/biz/tribe-comics-and-games-austin), who said they “try” to carry it -not quite sure what that means, but they kind of put it in the lap of their distributors, whom they would not divulge although I suspect it is Diamond.

Actually, hitting up Diamond is PROBABLY the way to go in this push -I know what a pain they can be in the industry, but they ARE the biggest and most complete distribution network.

    Austin seems covered!

  6. Thank you all for those recommendations and for talking to the store owners. Hugely appreciated!

Diamond does carry KQ, as it happens. But stores need to hear the word of mouth before they order from Diamond/Alliance/IPR etc.

  7. Darn, I wish my LGS supported more “D&D”… sadly the manager is pro-world of darkness only… That’s why I haven’t set fot in there for like 6 months :(

Here is the link for my COMIC BOOK store.

They’re not really a gaming store, but if it’s in the Diamond catalogue, I can order it.
They are very nice people too!

I get my Pathfinder AP through them.

  9. Butterfrog, you’re a published artist now, get in there and throw your might around!

    I’ll check my local stores.

Game Empire – San Diego and
    Pair-A-Dice Games in Vista

Artifex in Mira Mesa is trying to break into the RPG arena as well, So I’ll try to talk to their owners soon.

  10. Re: Compleat Strategist in NYC, I have seen copies of KQ on the shelf as recently as last Saturday. I guess it’s possible they aren’t ordering many and thus the shelf is empty of them on a regular basis, or maybe they just ordered it the one time I saw it. In any case, I have seen it there.

  11. Yoda, always glad to hear about places that order KQ and sell through!

Everyone else, thanks for the recommendations, will try to follow up. Maybe it’s worth creating a subscription flyer for places that *don’t* carry it? After all, it wouldn’t cost them any sales….. :)

  12. Horizon Books, Mitchel St. Petoskey,MI 49770
Next closest store is Borders in Traverse City,MI

I’m not sure either have your magazine but I’m 90% sure Horizon books dose not.

  13. I have talked with the owner of my local gaming store about your magazine and he wants to know more about Kobold Quarterly. Can make you any promesses here, but at least it’s a start! Here’s the address:

    Le Griffon
    19, rue Wellington Nord
    Sherbrooke, Québec, Canada
    J1H 5A9
    http://www.legriffon.com

Lets hope that the kobold will become a big dragon someday!
